Dan Mathers is the Executive Director of the Nuclear Innovation and Research Office.
NIRO is an arm of the UK National Nuclear Laboratory. NIRO draws on NNL and wider sector expertise to provide independent advice to the UK government on research and innovation needed for nuclear energy’s role in the energy mix, considering, reactor and fuel cycle development, deployment, siting, regulation, security, international collaboration, capabilities and skills.
NIRO also convenes and provides the technical secretariat for government and minister appointed advisory boards, launching a nuclear R&D Landscape Review and the case for industrial decarbonisation through nuclear powered heat and electricity.
Dan has 26 years of industry experience, including managing nuclear fuel plant operations and research on reactors, fuel cycles, decommissioning and waste management. Dan is also the incoming Chair of the OECD NEA Nuclear Science Committee.
