During this U.S. State visit to the UK in September 2025, several agreements were signed between UK and US companies to advance the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced reactors in both the U.S. and UK.
The new government deal called the Atlantic Partnership for Advanced Nuclear Energy is designed to fast track the licencing process for new nuclear power stations in both the UK and the US. By accepting each other’s licencing process, the approval time is expected to be reduced from approximately 4 years down to about 2 years. Both countries also agreed to strengthen energy security by eliminating all remaining dependencies on Russian nuclear material by the end of 2028. The partnership also extends to collaboration on fusion energy research by combining the two nations expertise in AI technology.
This agreement has led to some major private-sector commercial announcements.
