The UK government launched a public consultation on the 6th October 2025 and concluding on 1st December 2025. The consultation is on the regulatory justification of the Rolls Royce SMR reactor design. It invites views on whether the SMRs societal benefits outweigh potential detriments, a legal step before deployment. Meanwhile the design is progressing through Generic Design Assessment (GDA) with a public consultation on preliminary findings due in January 2026 and a final regulatory decision expected in late 2026.
