Royal Society and French Academie des Sciences – nuclear science and engineering

The Royal Society and the Académie des sciences co-hosted a bilateral scientific meeting on Nuclear Science and Engineering on 18 – 19 July 2024, bringing together delegates from the UK and France to discuss recent breakthroughs, share best practices, explore areas of mutual interest, and identify opportunities for further collaboration.   The Co-chairs conclusions and recommendations from the meeting are summarised in the following nine key points:  
  1. Delivery of new nuclear must be optimised.
  2. Nuclear can offer more than electricity.
  3. UK and France can lead on demonstrating advanced systems.
  4. Long term fuel supply can be secured.
  5. Advanced fuels can fuel the future.
  6. Nuclear is sustainable.
  7. The nuclear sector can deliver the skills it needs.
  8. The UK and France can deliver new nuclear R&D infrastructure.
  9. The UK and France can enhance their bilateral cooperation.
